Simple Smothered Salisbury Steak
Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 shallot, diced
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 2 teaspoons dry mustard powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 teaspoons olive oil
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 14 medium mushrooms, sliced
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
Supplies
- Large bowl
- Skillet
Directions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, shallot, Worcestershire sauce, cloves of garlic, ketchup, mustard powder, and salt and pepper.
Once everything is mixed, shape them into 4-5 patties.
In a skillet, add one teaspoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Cook the patties in batches or a single layer; cook for 1-2 minutes or until both sides are brown.
Remove the meat from the pan and pour off any excess fat.
Add the second teaspoon of olive oil and toss in the mushrooms; cook over medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes or until the mushrooms are softened.
Stir in the flour and gradually add the beef broth, stirring occasionally.
Once the mixture becomes smooth, add your beef back to the pan and reduce the heat to low-medium.
Spoon the gravy over your patties, cover the pan and let simmer for 7-10 minutes or until patties are thoroughly cooked.
Additional Ingredients
As you’ve probably imagined, you can add a slew of different spices to your gravy or ground beef mixture. You can easily blend parsley, oregano, garlic powder, or hotter spices like chili flakes and paprika. You can also swap out beef broth for French onion soup if you so choose.
There are also ways to make your Salisbury steak recipe vegan-friendly. You can blend mushrooms, flax seeds, panko breadcrumbs, and a few other ingredients to recreate the steak and switch out the beef broth for vegetable stock when making the gravy.
If you’re looking for a low-fat option, you can always use lean ground beef. For a low-carb version, use finely ground pork rinds over breadcrumbs.
Toss in your seasoning of choice to make this Salisbury steak recipe personal to your tastes. Since steak is pretty versatile, you can also easily create a vegan or diet-friendly version for dinner!
