Revolutionize Your Mashed Potatoes
These garlic mashed potatoes are absolutely delightful the way they are, however, there are countless means of making them extra unique. Mashed potatoes can be dressed up by adding various add-ins, and the consistency of the mash can be more creamy or more rustic in texture depending on your preference. Read on to see how you can put a twist on your homemade mashed potatoes.
Texture
This recipe calls for the potatoes to be peeled. If you like additional texture in your mashed potatoes or want to skip the extra step of peeling, feel free to keep the skin on. Potato skins are a good source of fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, and calcium, as well as essential vitamins B and C. Although your mashed potatoes won’t be extra creamy, they will offer extra nutrition, and the dish will have a more rustic feel.
Herbs And Spices
Both fresh and dried herbs can offer your mashed potatoes a refreshing flavor. Our recipe calls for a garnish of parsley, but feel free to try something different. Common herbs and spices in mashed potatoes include:
- rosemary
- chives
- thyme
- parsley
- dill
- basil
- paprika
- onion powder
- cumin
- cayenne pepper
- white pepper
Cheese
Cheese makes everything better! Adding cheese to your mashed potatoes is a definite way to give your side dish an excellent flavor boost. There are an array of cheeses you can add to your mash. Here are just a few ideas:
- parmesan
- cream cheese
- Gruyere
- cheddar
- gouda
- asiago
- Jarlsberg
Creaminess
To achieve a smooth, creamy, consistency in mashed potatoes, different ingredients can be used. Some add-ins such as sour cream or cream cheese can provide additional flavors and your desired consistency in your mash.
- sour cream
- chicken stock
- milk
- butter
- evaporated milk
- reserved water from boiled potatoes
- half and half
- heavy cream
- almond milk
- rice milk
- soy milk
Other Add-Ins
Aside from herbs, cheese, and extra creaminess, there are other add-ins for your mashed potatoes. To kick your mashed potatoes up a notch, try adding in some bacon for a smoky, salty flavor, or some scallions for an extra bite. The possibilities are endless.
Meal Ideas
Mashed potatoes pair beautifully with hearty dishes that consist of roasted vegetables and meats such as beef or chicken. Some of our favorites include:
- Sliced New York strip steak, topped with truffle butter, with a side of roasted vegetables, and garlic mash.
- Bangers and mash topped with decadent homemade gravy and a side of roasted vegetables
- Slow cooker roasted chicken with garlic mash and candied carrots.
