Let’s be honest: We’re obsessed with Netflix. Netflix has gotten us through some lazy weekends, breakups, and quarantine. It’s seen us in sweatpants, in bed, and with a giant tub of ice cream in our hands. Netflix is just there for us, ya know?
Well, we have good news for all of our Netflix lovers out there! Netflix is preparing for its biggest year ever and will release at least one new movie, per week, for the duration of the year. Here are some of the highlight movies that we’re excited for in 2021:
Blonde
Any other Marilyn Monroe buffs out there? If so, grab your popcorn. With a star-studded cast featuring fan favorites such as Ana de Armas, Adrien Brody, and Bobby Cannavale, Blonde delves into the private life of Marilyn Monroe in the ’50s and 60s. The film is based on Joyce Carol Oates’ popular novel with the same name.
Don’t Look Up
Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothee Chalamet, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, and Cate Blanchett all starring (literally) in the same movie? Sign us up! Don’t Look Up is a fictional movie about two astronomers who must go on a nationwide media tour to warn the country of an impending comet that will inevitably lead to the Earth’s destruction. This political satire disaster comedy is written and directed by former SNL head writer and co-founder of Upright Citizens Brigade, Adam McKay, so expect a lot of laughs as you’re watching (and stargazing!).
I Care a Lot
Gone Girl fans, rejoice! Rosamund Pike is back in an equally creepy, equally freaky role in an upcoming thriller called I Care a Lot. Pike plays a conniving businesswoman and legal guardian who makes her living through swindling funds from her elderly clients. But she meets her match with new client Jennifer Peterson (played by Dianne Wiest) and soon realizes that swindling her won’t be so easy after all.
Love Hard
Love Hard is a new romantic comedy that revolves around a SoCal woman (Nina Dobrev) falling in love with an East Coast guy (Charles Melton) on a dating app. She decides to surprise her new man for Christmas, only to find out that he’s been catfishing her this whole time. But there’s a catch, here…the guy she thought she was talking to actually lives in the same town as her catfisher. The woman’s catfisher agrees to introduce the two of them if (and only if) she agrees to pretend to be his girlfriend for the holidays. Sounds scandalous, and we’re here for it!
Moxie
Amy Poehler? Yes, please! Introducing Moxie…a dramatic comedy written and produced by Amy Poehler coming to Netflix on March 3rd. The film details a shy 16-year-old’s (Hadley Robinson) quest to undo the sexist and toxic undertones at her high school. The girl does just that by anonymously publishing a zine that sparks a total revolution from the inside and out. Girl power!
Penguin Bloom
Break out the tissues! Penguin Bloom is based on a true story of a woman named Sam Bloom (played by Naomi Watts) who experiences a debilitating accident that ultimately leaves her unable to walk. Sam’s family (her three young children, husband, and mother) are all struggling to adjust to her new disability when a surprise enters their life. What surprise? Well, an injured baby magpie, of course! The baby magpie is named Penguin and quickly nursed back to health by the grief-stricken Bloom family. We won’t spoil the ending, but we reiterate: this one’s a tearjerker!
Sweet Girl
Jason Momoa fans, it’s your time to shine! Momoa stars in Sweet Girl as a doting husband and father who is grieving the untimely death of his wife. The movie centers around Momoa’s quest to bring his wife’s killer to justice and to protect his daughter at all costs. Give us some mo’ of that Momoa!
The Dig
This creepy historical film stars Carey Mulligan as a wealthy widow who hires an archeologist (Ralph Fiennes) to excavate some burial mounds on her looming estate. Mulligan and Fiennes make some historic discoveries that ultimately leave the rest of Britain questioning everything. If that sounds mysterious, that’s because it is! The Dig just dropped on Netflix on January 29th.
The Guilty
The Guilty is a thriller centering on a 911 call center operator Joe Bayler (Jake Gyllenhaal) who is trying to save a caller in a tumultuous situation. But soon, Bayler realizes that the caller may not necessarily be telling the truth. In this film, Bayler has to separate truth from lies and may just need to look deep within himself to get some answers. The Guilty is a perfect date night flick…just enough to keep your heart pounding so you and your boo can grab on to each other!
There’s Someone Inside Your House
YA readers, rejoice! Stephanie Perkins’ bestselling novel is finally making its way to the small screen. There’s Someone Inside Your House is a fast-paced thriller that centers around high school students in small-town Nebraska who are being stalked by a serial killer hellbent on releasing their innermost secrets. The students need to crack the case on who is killing their classmates…before they become one of the victims themselves!
YES DAY
This comedy starring Jennifer Garner and Edgar Ramirez is the perfect family flick…or perfect when you want a good laugh. YES DAY centers around a family who decides to say “yes” to all of their kids’ requests for 24 hours. What ensues is a big adventure, a lot of laughs, and a family brought closer together. #Heartwarming!
