You see these foods in the supermarket all the time, but you probably never figured they grew this way.
Pineapples
With words like pine, apple, and leaves that make you think of a tropical tree, many people never realize that pineapples actually grow in short little prickly bushes by the ground. That’s why they’re so pointy — for protection.
Brussel Sprouts
These don’t grow on trees, they don’t grow underground, and they aren’t miniature versions of lettuce. They grow on the side of stalks, like this.
Peanuts
Peanuts are a popular snack, but they don’t grow on trees like other nuts. They grow underground in the roots.
Cashews
Cashews are another strange growing nut. They’re the little things dangling on the end of what looks like a fruit here.
Regular Artichoke…
Flowering Artichoke
If you don’t catch it quick enough, an artichoke reveals its true nature: A giant purple flower! It looks like it belongs under the sea.
Capers
Capers, too, grow into a flower. The food we use is the bud before it blossoms.
Broccoli
Yep, broccoli is a flower too. All those little buds will turn into flowers if you don’t pick it and eat it fast enough.
Kiwi
Turns out that kiwis are a lot like grapes. They grow on these vines that resemble a vineyard.
Asparagus
Asparagus are literally stalks. They don’t grow on anything, they grow right up out of the ground.
Saffron
Saffron is actually the yellow stamen of the saffron crocus.
Persimmons
These grow on a creepy, empty looking, haunted type of tree.
Bananas
You probably know bananas grow in bunches since they are sold that way. But you might not have known that they’re actually part of a giant flower! They encircle its stem. Also, this plant is technically not a tree, it’s just really tall.
